Premier League giants Liverpool could be set to lose one of their most talented midfielders as contract talks between the Merseyside club and Germany international Emre Can are reportedly stalling.
Can has given no suggestions that he wants to remain at the club beyond the length of his current contract and, according to the Liverpool Echo, his departure would create a huge dilemma for manager Jurgen Klopp.
This campaign marks the the German’s fourth season with Liverpool and he has become a highly important and talented player. A regular name on Klopp’s team sheet, Can is a versatile box-to-box midfielder who both allows other players such as Philippe Coutinho to flourish alongside him, while also possessing his own flair and guile.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, the midfielder can begin talking to clubs about a possible move as soon as the January transfer window opens. This means that Liverpool face a difficult decision.
Do they give him the higher wages and release clause that he wants, even though that would make negotiating with other players more difficult? Do they cut their losses and sell him in January? And, perhaps most importantly for the club’s on-pitch success, do they continue to play him?
It is certainly in Liverpool’s best interests to keep hold of their talented German, but there is little doubt that a whole host of clubs will be interested if Can does decide to leave Merseyside.
