Despite the huge amount of faith he shows in Alberto Moreno, Jurgen Klopp clearly acknowledges that left back is a position of weakness within his Liverpool side and is looking to address it in the January transfer window.
Last season the versatile midfielder James Milner stood in as a makeshift left sided defender and Moreno, when he did feature, looked incredibly shaky defensively. In the summer Klopp did look to solve the issue by bringing in £10m man Andy Robertson from Hull, but the Scotland international has failed to make an impact thus far.
Defence has long been an issue for the Merseyside club, though this season their frailty has been laid bare for all to see by a string of almost embarrassing defensive performances in the last few weeks. Missing out on Southampton centre half Virgil van Dijk in the summer seems to have cost Liverpool massively, but the Reds will get another chance to patch up their back line in January.
The man who could help them do that is 23-year old Roma fullback Emerson Palmieri. The Brazilian made 36 appearances for the Italian club in all competitions last season and impressed with his pace and calmness on the ball. He offers both defensive solidity and an attacking threat, which is exactly what Liverpool are looking for.
