It is little secret to fans of Premier League football that Liverpool are in dire need of a new defender or two in the January transfer window. The Reds currently sit in sixth position in the table, having conceded 18 goals already this season.
With much made about Jurgen Klopp’s inability to secure a deal for Southampton centre half Virigil van Dijk, it appears as if the German coach is planning ahead when it comes to January. As a result Liverpool have been linked with current West Brom loanee Ahmed Hegazi, according to ESPN.
The Egyptian international had a phenomenal start to life as a Baggies player, scoring a powerful header on his debut. Since then however things have gone slightly downhill. The Birmingham based side are without a clean sheet in their last eight, but Hegazi has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise fairly dire season.
If Liverpool are to challenge for the title, or at least for a Champions League spot, they need to tighten up their defence. The Reds have the worst defensive record in the top seven, and find themselves a monumental 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City after 13 games.
Hegazi could be the first step towards a better back line, and could perhaps help instil some confidence in the likes of Dejan Lovren, who has been calamitous at times in this campaign.
